Student Support
Advising
The first level of support is your academic advisor. Your academic advisor is there to help you make the most of your experience at Iowa State from the beginning. Academic advisors help prospective students and their families learn about the program, help new students become oriented to the department and university, and support current students throughout their time in the program if they have questions, concerns, or seek help planning for the future. Your advisor can support you by connecting you with resources on campus and in the community and by helping you to develop decision-making, problem-solving, and self-advocacy skills.
Advisors for students in the various areas are:
Kevin Judge, Music Advising Coordinator (All areas, 219 Simon Estes Music Hall)
Elizabeth Zimmerman, Theatre/Performing Arts Advising Coordinator (All areas, 3220 Pearson Hall)
Scholarships
The Iowa State University Department of Music and Theatre awards scholarships primarily on the basis of auditions, with consideration also given to departmental needs. These scholarships are primarily available to students majoring in performing arts and music. Some consideration is also given to minors and non-majors.
Music scholarship opportunities
Theatre scholarships for incoming freshman students
Theatre scholarships for returning and transfer students
Music Theory Diagnostic Exam
To succeed performance and academics, it is essential to be fluent in the fundamentals of music prior to entering the degree program. We'll assess theory knowledge with a diagnostic exam prior to the start of the student's first semester. Students are encouraged to review theory fundamentals.
