Name: Kyle Grossnickle

Major: Music Education, Bass Trombone

Hometown: Gilbert, Iowa

Planned Graduation Date: May 2023

What are you involved with here at ISU and beyond?

I am involved in Wind Ensemble, Marching band, Trombone Choir, Cardinal Eats (A food publication), and I have taught individual and group trombone lessons.

What pieces are you working on right now?

Right now I'm working on the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto to play on Bass Trombone for my attempt at the Concerto Competition here at ISU

What are you doing/looking forward to this semester?

I am most looking forward to playing challenging repertoire with full ensembles this semester.

What is your favorite thing about your experiences at Iowa State?

My favorite thing about my experience is the friends I've made. Even my friends can attest to me being socially awkward all the time but I feel like they are always there for me and we share our successes and learning opportunities together.

Why did you choose the Dept. of Music and Theatre at ISU?

I chose ISU Music because I loved the trombone choir. I was able to participate in it during my senior year of high school. In my opinion, trombone choir music is some of the most powerful and moving music I have ever heard.

What are your interests beyond music and theatre?

Beyond music, I love watching Iowa State and Baltimore Ravens football teams. I've been trying to cook more and learn to use various seasonings and spices in foods. But I often circle back to music but newer and weirder, I've recently been obsessed over the album Hamburger Concerto by the rock group Focus, both because of its name and interesting musical content.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I would like to teach at the college or high school level and hopefully maintain performance opportunities.

Any words of wisdom for prospective students?

Put the fun in fundamentals.
