What are you involved with here at Iowa State? I’ve been involved with numerous things at Iowa State. Although, most of my involvement has been with ISU Theatre, I began my journey as an news anchor for ISUtv. I have performed in three main stage shows as well as One Act and Ten Minute play festivals. I have also worked as a stagehand, assistant stage manager, and been apart of wardrobe crew.
What is your favorite thing about your experiences so far? My favorite thing about my experiences so far is being able to work with and learn from talented and motivated individuals. My friends, peers, and faculty have made this experience an unforgettable one, and I will cherish all the lessons learned and memories made.
Why did you choose Iowa State’s Theatre Program? I initially came to Iowa State with another path in mind, but my true calling to the arts led me to the Theatre Program. I chose this program because it offers the opportunity to learn about all areas in theatre aside from just performing. I have gained a wealth of knowledge and appreciation for all aspects of theater, backstage, onstage, lighting, costume design and etc. My journey in this program hasn’t always been easy but it’s been well worth it.
What project are you now working on? I am currently working on my Senior Capstone project: Diversity in the Arts (D.I.T.A.). My goal for this project is to create a Multi-Ethnic student task force, which will represent our Music/Theater Department. We plan to do outreach within the community, create a mentorship program, and promote diversity (including religious affiliation & sexual orientation) that extends beyond our department. My long term goal for this project is for it to continue to grow and have an impact on our university.
Advice for prospective students: Keep God first and be true to yourself. In all that you do gain as much knowledge as you possibly can. Be open to new opportunities, be receptive to constructive criticism, and allow yourself to be flexible. If you want something you have to go get it, nothing in this life is going to be handed to you. If you want to make a change you have to be the change. Always remain humble, always believe in yourself, and never ever give up.
