Rob Sunderman

Faculty/Staff Profile: 

Rob Sunderman (Resident Scenic Designer) graduated from the University of Iowa with a BFA, MA, and MFA in Fine Art. He has been the Resident Scenic Designer, Scenic Artist, and Associate Professor of Theatre Design at Iowa State University for the past 19 years. He has designed and scenic painted over 275 shows during his theatre/TV career and been in over 200 fine art exhibits. Rob has received Iowa Film awards, National Broadcasting Designers awards, and Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival awards for his Scenic Designs and also many fine art awards. Rob continues to pursue his scholarly work for regional/national theatre, opera, TV, industrial events and various fine art venues. This year he is designing and painting the sets for ISU Theatre’s productions of This is Not a Pipe Dream, Orpheus in the Underworld, and Sense and Sensibility. This past summer he designed the set for Nebraska Wesleyan University’s production of All Shook Up. He is also designing the set design for Revival Theatre’s production of Sunday in the Park with George in Cedar Rapids. This year his design work for a past Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre production will be published in the USITT’s Theatre Design & Technology Journal and his art work will be published in the retrospective book on Chunghi Choo and Students. Rob has exhibited and sold his fine art work in numerous galleries regionally and nationally. He recently has been working on a number of fine art series of work dealing with renewal, fleeting moments, and human intervention of natural cycles in a variety of mediums.
