AMES, Iowa – Something special is brewing this month on the Iowa State University campus. Under the leadership of Michael Giles, the ISU Jazz Ensembles are set to collaborate with two other dynamic university programs for an event that promises creativity, rhythm, and flavor in equal measure.
On Wednesday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m., the ISU Jazz Ensembles, the ISU Brew Lab, and the Memorial Union’s Maintenance Shop will join forces for “Jazz Night: Happy Hour.” This inventive concert will feature jazz tunes whose titles nod to classic adult beverages—paired perfectly with beers crafted by the ISU Brew Lab and served fresh on tap in the iconic M-Shop.
“The music is pretty happening, the students are excited to hit the M-Shop stage, and the timing couldn’t be better,” said Michael Giles, director of jazz studies at Iowa State.
The ISU Brew Lab, directed by Dr. Robert Brown, is a flourishing program that develops beers unique to Iowa State. Graduate research assistant Sarah Tyree will also offer presentations about the origins and evolution of the Brew Lab during the evening. “The Brew Lab really captures the creative side of science,” said Tyree. “Working with the Jazz Ensemble and The M-Shop has created an experience that’s truly unique to Iowa State, and it’s exciting to see the Brew Lab continue to grow and connect in new ways.”
A cornerstone of the Memorial Union, The Maintenance Shop has hosted an impressive list of musical movers and shakers over the years. With exciting music, craft brews, and a legendary venue, “Jazz Night: Happy Hour” promises an experience that embodies Iowa State’s signature blend of innovation and artistry.
