A Multifaceted Journey in the Arts and Agriculture
Iowa State University senior Zachary Ty Riedemann is a Performing Arts major with an emphasis in acting and directing, set to graduate in December 2024, leaving behind a legacy of artistic achievements and a passion for learning that stretches far beyond the theater.
A Calumet, Iowa native, Zachary is an embodiment of the unique blend of creative expression and practical expertise that defines his approach to both his studies and extracurricular involvement. In addition to his major in Performing Arts, Riedemann is also pursuing a second major in Agriculture Studies, focusing on ag communications and leadership, and a minor in Learning and Leadership Science.
This rare combination of disciplines has shaped Zachary’s experience on campus. Whether rehearsing for a play, leading a student organization, or engaging with agricultural communications, he has seamlessly woven together his diverse interests, creating an academic tapestry as colorful and dynamic as his personality.
“As a student pursuing multiple degrees, I’ve found that the department not only makes my college experience enjoyable but also provides the balance I need,” Riedemann shares. “It allows me to engage both my artistic and scientific passions, fully exploring my curiosity without feeling overwhelmed.” He appreciates the environment for growth and learning offered by the department and the vibrant, collaborative community it fosters.
A Student, a Leader, a Creator
Riedemann’s list of extracurricular activities speaks to his broad range of interests and commitments. He is a proud member of the Iowa Army National Guard, where his service reflects his leadership potential and commitment to the community. On campus, he is actively involved in The Vine Campus Ministry, Acacia Fraternity, and the Dean of Students Advisory Board, while also making time for more creative outlets such as the Stand-Up Comedy Club and ISU Theatre. He previously served as a Student Admissions Representative and a Theatre Student Representative. In addition, Zachary has had the chance to broaden his cultural perspective through two international study abroad experiences in Sweden and the Bahamas.
One of his proudest creative achievements will come to life this December when he directs All in a White Trash Pie as part of ISU Theatre’s Ten-Minute Play Festival, an annual highlight of ISU Theatre’s season. “I can’t wait to share the warmth of this play in the cold of December,” Riedemann shares. “It is going to be a great experience to share with the community watching all of the students’ hard work.”
A Message to Future Theatre Students
“Choosing Iowa State was one of the best decisions I’ve made,” Riedemann reflects. “The supportive community and the freedom to express my true self have been invaluable. The Theatre Department in particular has provided a nurturing and creative space where I’ve been encouraged to take risks and grow, not just as a performer but as a person. Whether it’s the simple kindness of free snacks in the office or the meaningful, personal conversations with faculty and staff, I’ve been given the space and grace to become the authentic Zachary Ty Riedemann.”
Looking toward his future, Zachary is making plans for life after graduation. After completing four months of military training, he will begin graduate school in Chicago, where he will become ordained and further his education in talent and organizational development. There, he hopes to immerse himself in Chicago’s vibrant creative scene, where he plans to build a name for himself in the world of acting, directing, and dance.
As someone who has always embraced collaboration and sought to elevate others, Zachary has some advice for aspiring theater students: “Embarking on this journey is about more than honing your craft—it's about discovering your voice, building resilience, and embracing the power of collaboration. Theatre demands creativity, discipline, and an open mind to explore diverse perspectives and stories. Whether you're performing on stage, working behind the scenes, or crafting a narrative, each role contributes to a larger story. Trust the process, remain curious, and take every opportunity to learn from your peers and mentors. Above all, remember that theatre is a space to grow both as an artist and as a person. Enjoy the ride!”
