A Double Major's Journey at Iowa State University
As a double major in Music (Vocal Performance) and Performing Arts, Asia Keane (’26), originally from Sioux City, Iowa, truly embodies the spirit of community and creativity that defines the Department of Music and Theatre
She is a member of Iowa State Singers and is currently rehearsing her role as Sally in the upcoming opera Die Fledermaus, a collaboration between ISU Theatre, ISU Opera, and ISU Symphony Orchestra.
“I think my favorite thing about my experiences at ISU is probably the amazing people I have met,” Asia reflects. “I’ve made some of my very best friends here, and I couldn’t be more grateful.” She shares her appreciation for the professors who have mentored her along the way. “They have given me endless opportunities and encouragement,” she says.
Welcoming Environment
Asia’s choice to attend Iowa State was motivated by its welcoming environment. “You always have people encouraging you and helping you to do your very best,” she explains. Asia extends that welcoming atmosphere to faculty, staff, students, and visitors as an office assistant in the ISU Theatre office.
Alongside her studies and job in the Theatre office, Asia also works as a party princess for Little Princess Parties, where she hones her performance skills in a fun and creative setting. With aspirations to pursue a Master’s degree in either Choral Conducting or Vocal Performance—if not both—Asia dreams of making a living as a performer.
Seizing Opportunities
As she navigates her academic and artistic journey, Asia has valuable advice for prospective students: “Embrace yourself and the people around you. Make sure to take every chance you get and never take your friends, family, or education for granted!”
Asia follows her own advice as she embraces opportunities both backstage and onstage. During the 2023-2024 season, Asia served as an assistant stage manager for ISU Theatre’s production of The Crucible as well as performing as Philoclea in Head Over Heels. Currently she is preparing to direct a ten-minute play for ISU Theatre's upcoming Ten-Minute Play Festival in December.
