What do you currently do for a living:
I am an Assistant Principal at Riverview Gardens High School in St. Louis, MO.
Can you share a particularly interesting or inspiring story that occurred in your career?
I was fortunate to be part of a "turn-around" early in my career as a high school band director - with much hard work and dedication the students brought pride and success back to their program and were able to continue on that path even after I moved on.
Are there other ways that you participate in your community and/or hot to engage as a Citizen Artist?
Although I'm an educational administrator now, I still perform regularly as a trumpeter in the St. Louis metro with the Civic Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and various other venues.
How did your time at ISU prepare you for your career?
I received a bachelor's degree in music education, but also became certified to teach German - I taught both subjects during my 16 years in the classroom before I transitioned into administration.
What was your favorite class while you were at ISU? Why?
Having taken over 200 credits as an undergrad, this is a difficult choice but it may have been the only class I had with Dr. Bleyle, one of the most inspirational and captivating people I have ever known.
How was your involvement in music and theatre beneficial in different parts of your life?
My involvement with music has shaped the person I am today, not to mention being a major part of my career. I received a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance and Music Education, and I'm incorporating the arts into my doctoral studies in educational leadership. Ultimately, I take solace in knowing that no matter my age and whereabouts on this planet throughout my life, I can take my trumpet along and play with a local group.
Any words of wisdom for current or prospective students?
You get what you put into your journey when studying music, this is especially true at ISU. Always be looking for opportunities and make sure you put in the practice time to be ready!
