Name: Cathy Compton
Major at ISU: Music Education/Voice
Graduation Year: 2008
Hometown: Ames, IA
Current Residence: Bloomington, IN
What were you involved in during your time at ISU:
I took part in Iowa State Singers, SOV (The Music Man!), and Residence Life.
What do you currently do for a living:
I am on the voice faculty at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and I serve as Managing Director of IU Opera & Ballet Theater.
Can you share a particularly interesting or inspiring story that occurred in your career?
One incredible thing about my current position is that Indiana University has a stage only slightly smaller than that of the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. One of the major projects I am focused on now is the co-production of work with the Met that will have its world premiere at IU!
How did your time at ISU prepare you for your career?
When I first started college, I thought I wanted to major in anything but music and go anywhere but Iowa State. As an Ames native, I was ready to get out of town! However, after enrolling at a university out of state, I experienced a change of heart. When I arrived at ISU mid-year, the faculty and students welcomed me with open arms, allowing me to find my voice and, ultimately, my path, in an inclusive and supportive space. The education I received continues to be the firm foundation of my teaching.
What was your favorite class while you were at ISU? Why?
So many! I loved my voice lessons with Dr. Simonson; Dr. Munsen's music ed curriculum; singing with Iowa State Singers and Cantamus; and Dr. Sturm's history classes. Dr. Prater has also been a hugely influential mentor in my life.
How was your involvement in music and theatre beneficial in different parts of your life?
Music and theater, time and again, has provided me with the sense of belonging and connection that I was fortunate to experience at Iowa State. One of the most precious gifts of my education and career in the arts has been having opportunities to travel, learn about other cultures, and collaborate with incredible artists from around the world.
Any words of wisdom for current or prospective students?
Be kind and curious, and know that you are receiving an education that will beautifully prepare you for your next chapter, whatever that may be.
