What were you involved in during your time at ISU:
I took part in Flute Choir, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and SALT company.
What do you currently do for a living:
I went on to Drake Law School and obtained my Juris Doctorate. I use that degree to manage a housing complex for elderly and disabled people in North Iowa.
Can you share a particularly interesting or inspiring story that occurred in your career?
In 2004 I was crowned Miss Iowa and went on to compete at Miss America. I performed a flute solo in the talent portion and won a Preliminary Talent Award. It was a wonderful year of service across the state of Iowa. I spoke at schools and businesses. In addition, I raised awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Are there other ways that you participate in your community and/or how you engage as a Citizen Artist?
I currently accompany many of the local schools in my area for concerts and solo ensemble contests. I play my flute in the Clear Lake Municipal Band and taught a flute masterclass for All-State at Waldorf University for the past 2 years.
How did your time at ISU prepare you for your career?
ISU allowed me to study music with Elizabeth Sadliek who taught me so much. My classes were engaging, fun, and informative. I recommend ISU to everyone including my children who are in high school now.
What was your favorite class while you were at ISU? Why?
Being in the Wind Ensemble was amazing! I had never performed with strings before so it was quite an experience.
How was your involvement in music and theatre beneficial in different parts of your life?
Performing on stage vocally, as a flutist, and as an organist boosted my confidence. The staff at ISU did everything they could to help me succeed. Dr. Schilling was my advisor and he now teaches my daughter private oboe lessons.
Any words of wisdom for current or prospective students?
Get involved with as many activities as you can! The time flies!
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I also enjoyed being in the ISU President’s class which met weekly at the President’s home to debate issues and discuss current events. The Honors Program helped me graduate in 3 years and get into classes that I needed for my degree.
