Iowa State University Theatre will participate in Playwrights Horizons’ #PlayOurPart initiative, a national, nonpartisan movement to increase voter participation by registering voters in theater lobbies. #PlayOurPart participants represent theatres from every corner of the nation, including Actors Theatre of Louisville, The Public Theatre, Tennessee Women’s Theatre Project, and Victory Gardens Theater, among others.
ISU Theatre has invited Vote Everywhere, a non-partisan voter registration ISU student organization, to set up registration booths at its production of This is Not a Pipe Dream, September 28-October 7, and Orpheus in the Underworld, November 1-4.
“Our partnerships locally with Vote Everywhere and nationally with Playwrights Horizons’ #PlayOurPart are thrilling examples of ISU Theatre’s new CoLab initiative,” said Director of Theatre Brad Dell. The CoLab seeks to foster collaboration and engagement between ISU Theatre and other groups both within ISU’s campus and throughout the broader community to create citizen artistry, inspire and be inspired by meaningful public discourse and expand opportunities for ISU students, faculty and staff.
In addition to registering voters at the fall shows, ISU theatre will also partner with Vote Everywhere at the October 1 “Monday Monologues” event at Parks Library. The lunchtime performance will take place from 12:15 - 12:45 pm in the Grant Wood Foyer and will feature readings of short, non-partisan Get Out the Vote plays curated by Lecturer of Theatre Tiffany Antone. Vote Everywhere will have a voter registration table set up in the library from 12:00-2:00 pm.
“This collection of plays includes 1-3 minutes non-partisan plays and monologues written by playwrights from around the country,” said Antone. “It will be a fun line-up, and people can join us for as few or as many of the pieces as they have time for.”
“The CoLab initiative and partnerships like this help to execute ISU Theatre’s mission of fostering citizen artistry among our students and within our community,” Dell said. “We’re excited to kick off this year’s CoLab calendar by partnering with nationally renowned Playwrights Horizons’ while also working locally with one of ISU’s student groups, Vote Everywhere.”
