Even though the new uniforms were "snappy black" and said "Iowa State U",  one could still see the color red (cardinal) on the uniform overlays.

Iowa State bandsmen grew fond of their conductor, Frank Piersol, whose career at Iowa State lasted from 1948 through 1967.  The next year he moved over to the University of Iowa were he served on the Music Department from 1968 through 1980.

This photo of Frank Piersol at the Iowa Bandmaster's convention was taken towards the end of his career.  He is seen smiling because he was describing what he had observed from his association with Karl King.
