The Iowa State University Cyclone Football Varsity Marching Band isn’t your parents’ marching band. The days of every marching band blasting “Louie Louie” are gone, and the Cyclone marching band has moved on to cover artists like Skillet, Kansas and Rush in recent years.
The band’s modern covers have also gained the attention of Rolling Stone Magazine. Their cover of No Doubt’s “Spiderwebs” earned them a spot on the magazine’s Top 10 list of “Mind-Blowing College Marching Band Cover Songs.”
Rolling Stone wrote of the band’s version of the song, which was on No Doubt’s third album: “It makes sense in a way: Tragic Kingdom found No Doubt transitioning from a high school ska band into one of the biggest rock acts of all time. As a nod to the band’s brass beginnings, Iowa State increases the song’s horn backing by a hundred fold and takes it from a ska-tinged rocker to a wall of trumpets.” Michael Still, an ISU junior who is a cymbal player in the marching band, was not a member when the band fi
rst performed the song in 2009. But Still said the recognition has made him even more proud of the band, and he hopes it can act as a “big spirit booster” for everyone in the band, as well as the Ames and Iowa State community.
“It encourages us to work harder and keep cranking out awesome tunes,” Still said. “For marching bands everywhere, I think this exposure is really great. It shows people that we aren’t just music geeks out there marching on the field. We do some really cool stuff, play some really cool music and have a lot of fun in the process.” And the music won’t stop there. Still said the group has recently performed popular songs like “The Fox” by Ylvis, “Gangam Style” by Psy and “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. “We like to balance the traditional ‘rah, rah, go team’ spirit songs with new stuff that people will recognize.”
