Jazz Ensemble 1 will kick off its 2018-19 concert season on October 10 at 7:30 in the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall. The band will perform standard and contemporary arrangements of compositions by Wayne Shorter, George Gershwin, Manning Sherwin, Fred Sturm, and Rick Margitza, and will also feature the Department of Music and Theatre’s Trombone Professor, Dr. Nathan Dishman, on Paul McKee’s fabulous arrangement of Victor Young’s Beautiful Love. There is a $5 admission charge.
The Iowa State University Jazz Ensemble 1 is the premier jazz band in the Department of Music, dedicated to performing big band compositions and arrangements written for the classic jazz orchestra. The ensemble is open to undergraduate music students, as well as students from every academic discipline on campus. Jazz Ensemble 1 has featured guest artists such as Mark Colby, Ron Carter, Reggie Thomas, Damani Phillips, Brian Blade, Joe Lovano, Christian McBride, JoAnne Brackeen, Dick Oatts, David Berkman, Reggie Thomas, Todd Strait, and Bob Bowman. The ensemble has also had the honor of being featured at the Iowa Jazz Championships, the Iowa Music Educators Association annual convention, in concert with the Central Iowa Symphony, and with the Village Vanguard at Stephens Auditorium, and has also been recognized for its soloists and achievements at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival, the Greeley Jazz Festival, and the Eau Claire Jazz Festival.
