ISU Jazz Combos

The ISU Jazz Combos, under the leadership of Michael Giles, provide opportunities for students to learn to communicate musically while playing jazz repertoire.  Various styles are introduced and explored.  Hands-on instruction addresses the role of each member in the ensemble, strengthens the concept of non-verbal interplay, highlights arranging techniques, and provides strategies for improvisation.  Frequent performance opportunities occur both on & off campus.  Musical material follows a programmatic directive that uses standard jazz tunes and encourages the transcription of nontraditional material.  One weekly coaching supplements one weekly student-led rehearsal, both occurring in a dedicated space for jazz groups.  A multitude of online sources are customized and made available to each ensemble.  Membership in these groups is at the discression of the director, and considers the audition as well as ability & availability.  The course is available for 1 credit, renewable each semester.  Interested in having a combo play for your private event or visit your school?  Kindly email the director at
