ISU Jazz Ensembles: Frequently Asked Questions
How can I participate?
The ISU jazz ensembles are assembled based on successful auditions and schedule availability. Auditions take place the weekend before the beginning of the fall semester. Should there be openings for the spring semester, that information will be advertised in Estes Hall.
Are there jazz scholarships?
Scholarships are available to rhythm section players who audition for and play with both an ISU big band and an ISU jazz combo. Instrumentation in the rhythm section consists of jazz bass, jazz piano, jazz guitar, and drumset.
How often do you rehearse?
The ISU big bands and ISU combos each rehearse twice/week.
What are the groups like?
jazzONE is a 17-piece big band that performs challenging repertoire in a professional setting. jazz 2.0 is an expanded big band that transitions high school musicians into playing at the collegiate level. The ISU jazz combos develop skills in arranging, improvisation, and interplay. In all ensembles, the material selected for each concert culls from the classics to the cutting edge.
Are there instruments available?
Rhythm section players have access to amplifiers (bass & guitar), drumsets, and piano/keyboards. Flugelhorns and various saxophones can be rented through the music department.
How many performances are there?
Each ISU jazz ensemble performs in two Jazz Night concerts each semester. Those performances are live-streamed via the department website. Other off-campus opportunities occur, and those dates/logistics will be shared at the beginning of each semester.
Do I have to be a music major?
Nope. The makeup of each ensemble changes frequently, always maintaining a healthy blend of talented students from a wide cross-section of degree pursuits.
