Prerequisite
1010, 1050, or 2210, or permission of instructor based on the following:
Students should be familiar with basic musical concepts and terminology, for example note values, tempo, meters, pitch names and octave relationships. The ability to read music at the level of performance in high-school musical ensembles is normally sufficient as background for this course. Students must have at least a consumer-level proficiency using Macintosh or Windows operating systems (course instruction uses Macintosh).
Students whose musical abilities are primarily realized 'by ear' must demonstrate a knowledge of the basic concepts and terminology listed above, as these are necessary for the development of creative projects using music software.
Note: Students who wish to continue into advanced courses (346 and 446) should especially take care to have these prerequisites or take a course in music theory.
Description
Introduction to audio and MIDI software used in creating digital music. Includes fundamentals of audio waveform editing, processing, and mixing, MIDI data structures, practical projects in musical composition using a digital audio workstation.
