Serving the Iowa State University Music Department since 1925!!

A Brief Chapter History

A group of women active in music at Iowa State College met on November 6, 1912, to form a local gorup to promote interest in music among the women of Iowa State College.

The name "Lambda Mu" (Love of Music) was chosen, their colors were purple and gold, and their flower was to b the purple violet.

The first appearance of Lambda Mu was on April 8, 1924, at a recital for Sigmund Spaeth, where the women served as ushers.

The following May, fourteen women were initiated, with a successful year following. Their program included a recital, the sponsoring of a tag day to send the band to Drake, dinner with members of Phi Mu Alpha, and affiliation with the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs.

In 1925, Lambda Mu petitioned for membership in Sigma Alpha Iota and was accepted, becoming Sigma Lambda chapter of SAI.
