About

The Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra continues a performing tradition which is over 100 years old. The orchestra has become an integral part of the University's musical tradition through performance of symphonic repertoire, operas, oratorios, and musical theatre productions. It presents some six major concerts each year in either Stephens Auditorium or the Martha-Ellen Tye Recital Hall. Comprised of more than 70 students representing a wide variety of academic disciplines, the ISU Symphony Orchestra seeks to provide intensive training for music students majoring in performance or education while also furnishing a fulfilling artistic outlet for experienced non-major performers. In addition the ensemble seeks to actively promote quality symphonic music representing both the traditional and contemporary idioms to the campus community and throughout the state of Iowa. A short biography of the director James Hannon is available here.
