How to Join

For all the members of our Cyclone Marching Band, this group is like a home away from home, filled with musicians who often become life-long friends. The Cyclone Marching Band is definitely an exciting experience that you will never forget. We encourage you to become a member.

Anyone interested in joining the Cyclone Marching Band or any other band at Iowa State University must submit a Application for Membership. When you return this application form, we will send you timely mailings that will inform you of upcoming band concerts, audition procedures and rehearsal times. The application form can be downloaded and viewed using the freely available Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Woodwinds and Brasses
The Cyclone Marching Band marches with piccolos, clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, trumpets, horns (mellophones), trombones, baritones, and tubas (sousaphones). All students who wish to be considered for membership in the Cyclone Marching Band must complete a playing audition, either in person or by sending in a recording.   Auditions will be waived for woodwind and brass players who have auditioned and been accepted as a music major, unless they wish to audition for twirler, flag, or drumline positions.

Audition Procedures

• Prepare your audition (see materials below)

• Arrange an appointment to audition in person or by sending in a recorded audition. Auditions will be held on Day 2 of the June orientation programs. You may schedule an audition by calling the music office at 515-294-5364 during the week prior to your orientation visit.

• If you know that you will be visiting campus during the school year, you can contact Mr. Smith directly or through the Office of Admissions to arrange a meeting or audition.  If you audition during your senior year of high school, you will probably already be in good playing shape and have less to think about during the summer!  (This is only for woodwind and brass players).

Audition Materials for Woodwinds and Brasses

  • Two major scales of your choice (two octaves)
  • Chromatic scale (two octaves)
  • One brief excerpt of material (solo, etude, etc.)

If you are submitting an audition via recording, please complete the new member Application for Membershipand submit it along with your recording. Please mail to:

Auditions that are sent via cassette or cd must be received by Friday, June 20 to receive full consideration.

Flags

Because of our demanding show schedule, membership in the colorguard is determined by audition. We generally learn five to seven shows each season, which places a lot of responsibility on the members of our guard. We only march with flags, we do not use sabers or rifles at ISU. In addition to the normal rehearsal schedule, colorguard members have one additional sectional per week, usually on Tuesday evenings during the marching band season.

Audition dates are held on selected Saturdays during the spring and summer. You only need to attend one audition, but we recommend that you audition early. Previous flag experience is highly desirable. You do not need to prepare a routine for the auditions. Flags and poles will be provided at the audition.

Flag auditions will be begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Music Hall (please visit the ISU homepage for a map). Wear comfortable clothes! The morning will be spent learning basic marching techniques, flag and movement fundamentals, and working on sample routine maneuvers. After a lunch break, there will be a review of all material followed by placement auditions. Your day should end by 3:00 p.m. at the latest.

Due to the extensive audition activities, we cannot arrange for individual auditions or additional audition dates.  You must attend one of the days below.

Flag Audition Dates for 2008 will take place beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17 and Saturday, June 14 at the Music Hall.  Please call and notify us of your intent to audition at 515-294-2810.

If you are interested in auditioning for the colorguard, please call the band office at 515-294-2810, and RSVP for one of the audition dates.

Twirlers

We will not have openings for twirler positions for the fall of 2008.
