Welcome! We are excited that you are interested in becoming a music major at Iowa State University. Below is information regarding the process to become admitted and receive a music scholarship.
To be accepted as a music major, students must demonstrate an appropriate level of performance on an instrument or voice, as well as potential for successful professional work in music. In addition, all students must complete placement examinations in music theory and piano which may be taken during summer orientation, the first week of the fall semester, or by appointment. Placement examinations for piano and music theory do not affect your acceptance as a music major.
Students who are interested in learning about their preparation for college level music theory, can take a sample examination on music fundamentals here.
Auditions to become a music major for the 2014-2015 academic year will be held February 13-15, 2014. If you are unable to attend one of the February dates, you should contact the faculty in the appropriate area to schedule an alternative audition time.
To apply to become a music major and to be considered for a music scholarship, you must submit both the “Application for Music Major and/or Music Scholarship” and “Recommendation in Support of Application for Music Scholarship” completed forms.
This recommendation should be submitted by a school music director and/or a private teacher who is familiar with your musical ability. Your application file will not be considered complete without the completed application form and at least one recommendation form. Along with the forms, you must also attend an audition session. All auditions must be completed by February 21, 2014.
